Types of Fractures

A fracture is a broken bone. A bone may be completely or partially fractured in a variety of ways (crosswise, lengthwise, in multiple pieces).

The severity of the fracture often depends on the force which resulted in the break. If the bone’s breaking point has been surpassed only by a slight margin, then the bone may crack as opposed to breaking all the way through. If the force of the trauma is extreme, the bone may shatter completely.

The following are the common types of fractures:

  • Stable fracture
  • Open, compound fracture
  • Transverse fracture
  • Comminuted fracture
  • Oblique fracture

Common causes of fractures include trauma (auto accident or fall), osteoporosis, or overuse. Common symptoms include bruising, swelling, and even deformity (looking “out of place”).
