What to Do After a Houston Car Accident

Our car accident rehabilitation specialists suggest that you take the following steps after a car accident:

  1. Call for help - If you, a passenger, or another person involved in the accident appears to be injured, immediately call 911 and request an ambulance. The police will also arrive at the scene to fill out an accident report; make sure that you request a copy of this report for your records.
  2. Gather evidence - If you are able and if it is safe to do so, take photos or videos of the scene of the accident, any damage to your vehicle, and any visible injuries you may have suffered. Take note of the make and model of the vehicle that hit you, the license plate number, and the insurance and contact information of the other driver.
  3. Talk to witnesses - If possible, take down the names and contact information of anyone who witnessed the accident. Their testimony as to how the accident occurred could prove invaluable later on.
  4. Seek medical attention - Even if you did not require emergency medical assistance at the time of the accident, or if you didn’t immediately feel injured, it is still essential that you seek medical attention. Symptoms of injuries commonly suffered in car accidents, such as whiplash and other soft tissue injuries, may not manifest until days after an accident when the adrenaline has worn off. Prompt assessment of these injuries is extremely important so that you can receive the treatment you need and avoid potential complications that could result in long-term problems.
  5. Keep records - After an accident, you should keep records of all out-of-pocket expenses you incurred as a result of the accident, such as hospital bills, vehicle repair costs, costs of medical care and follow-up appointments, and more.
