Exercises to Avoid if You Have Back Pain

More than 2/3 of Americans will experience back pain at some point during their lifetime. If you’ve already joined the ranks of the achy and uncomfortable, you’re probably itching for a way out. For many people, the first solution that comes to mind is exercise. Indeed, exercise is essential when seeking back pain relief and it can certainly strengthen the muscles in your lower back.

However, exercising the wrong way can be disastrous.

Steer Clear of These Moves While Exercising With Lower-Back Pain

With this in mind, there are a few exercises you should avoid if you are experiencing pain in your lower back:

  • Overhead lifting: Lifting weights is a great way to help out-of-wack back muscles. However, by lifting weight over your head, you place pressure on your spinal discs, creating the potential for serious and painful lower-back injury.
  • Jumps, squats, or other motions with extra weight held on the shoulder(s): These moves require a strong, healthy spine in order to be effective, rather than harmful. If you are suffering from pain in your lower back, that should be an indicator that your spine and back are not as healthy as they ought to be, making weighted squats, lunges, etc. too risky.
  • Touching your toes: This is a staple in virtually everyone’s warmup routine. However, because of the pressure it place on your spine, it’s best to steer clear of this one until your lower-back pain is resolved.
