How to Avoid Injury After a Period of Inactivity

If you’ve decided that 2018 is your year to get fit, eat right, and start taking care of yourself, we applaud you. However, we have seen many eager gym-goers head straight for the bench with a lot of enthusiasm but not enough technical knowledge to lift weights properly. As a result, many people’s new-year-new-me enthusiasm fizzles out into pain, injury, and months of sedentary recovery. If you are ready to hit the gym after a period of inactivity, be sure you take note of the following before doing any heavy lifting:

  • Always, always, always stretch. Because many people cite lack of time as a reason for not working out in the first place, it may be tempting to cut corners in order to save time when you start working out again. However, not taking the time to stretch virtually guarantees that you will end up with a stress fracture, pulled muscle, or other debilitating injury, landing you right back at home where you started.
  • Master proper form and posture first. If you attempt to do any form of weightlifting, from power lifting to weighted squats, you must take the time to learn how to perform the motion properly before adding any weight. If you jump straight into weighted exercises without ensuring you are exhibiting proper posture, you run the risk of a number of serious injuries, including disc herniation, tears to the rotator cuff or labrum, a torn hamstring, or inflammation of other joints such as the elbow or knee.
  • Gradually build up your weight and resistance. Don’t start off with more weight than you can comfortably lift. There is no shame in easing slowly into an exercise routine, and it doesn’t do you any favors to start off too heavy. You’ll definitely be sore the next day, but you may also have a serious injury.
