Whether you play competitively for a team, play to stay in shape, or play for fun, many people participate in sports for some reason or another. Playing in sports is exceptionally beneficial for your health; however, it can also result in injury.

The severity of these injuries ranges from minor to significant, with some requiring surgery to recover completely. These injuries are often caused by poor training, flawed techniques, inadequate equipment, not being conditioned, not stretching properly, or due to an accident.

The following are the five most common sports injuries:

  • Sprains and strains – The reason why these types of sports injuries are by far the most common because it can occur in almost any type of physical activity. A sprain happens when a ligament overstretches or tears, often common in ankles, knees, and wrists. A strain is also considered a pulled muscle, occurring when the fibers within the muscle or tendon tear or stretch too much.
  • Knee injuries – More than five million people visit orthopedic surgeons for knee-related issues and injuries every single year. Mild knee injuries include tendonitis and iliotibial band syndrome, while severe cases involve bruising or damage to cartilage or ligaments, such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL).
  • Dislocations – When a force pushes the bone in a joint out of alignment, dislocation of the bone can occur. While a dislocated bone can be put back into place, the connective tissue surrounding the joint may have suffered serious damage. Most common joints that are dislocated are the fingers and hand, as well as the shoulder. They often occur in contact sports, excessive stretching, or simply falling.
  • Fractures – Also known as broken bones, they are often caused by a one-time accident or repeated stress on a bone over time. Most are considered as emergencies, often requiring surgery to repair completely.
  • Shin splints – It happens when pain along the tibia (shin bone) occurs, typically at the front outside part of the lower leg, but can also occur in the foot and ankle or where the bone connects to the calf muscles at the inner edge of the bone. It is common with runners.
