How to Reduce Neck Pain after a Car Accident

Whiplash is a common injury in car accidents.

There are many cases of whiplash that – after the initial treatment – heal after a few days. However, those with severe whiplash experience substantial, long-lasting pain that may last for weeks, months, or even longer.

The following are ways reduce your discomfort and ease stress on your neck:

  • Sleep on your back or side. Avoid sleeping on your stomach because proper breathing requires you to rotate your head to one side, placing any strain on your neck that can aggravate your neck pain.
  • Perform regular neck stretches and exercises. A simple and effective exercise is called the “chin-tuck.” Lean your back against a wall with your feet a few inches in front, then move your head backward until the back of your head rests on the wall. Keep in mind, do not tilt your head forward or backward. Rather, move it straight back, causing your chin to “tuck” into your neck. Regular stretching and exercising can relieve muscular tension in your neck and maintain flexibility in your spine.
  • Maintain proper posture. Bad posture, which includes slouching or craning your neck, can increase neck pain and aggravate whiplash symptoms. Always keep your shoulders back and your chest out since this helps align your spine.
  • Adjust your computer screen. Since most of us work on computers on a daily basis, ensure that your computer screen set up properly to avoid undue strain on your neck and back. To find out, sit in your desk chair with your eyes closed and make sure you are not slouching or reclining. When you open your eyes, your screen should be directly in front of you. If you must look down or adjust your head to see your screen properly, make the proper corrections.
  • Keep hydrated. The fluids and cushions in your spine are comprised of mostly water. If you are dehydrated, the flexibility of your spinal discs is reduced, which can make your neck and back hurt more. Drink small amounts of water throughout the day to ensure proper spine flexibility.
  • Avoid smoking. Did you know that smoking can cause health problems related to back and neck pain? The chemicals used in cigarette tobacco harm a variety of body systems, including the spinal column. In addition, smoking hinders the injury recovery process.
